I’m Here

Spike Jonze, noted indie director, is mainly known for his music videos (for bands such as Fatboy Slim, Björk, Daft Punk) and his infrequent forays into feature films (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and recently, Where the Wild Things Are). 2010, however, saw the release of his 4th short film, I’m Here. Debuting at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Jonze’s latest film shows that he is clearly at the top of his game. Arguably his best work yet, and easily one of the best short films I’ve seen in a long time, this is a must see for anyone* with a computer and 30 minutes to spare.

I’m Here is an original and absorbing love story set in a world where humans and robots co-exist together. Despite being treated as second-class citizens, some of the robots begin to question their limited mechanical status, and venture to explore their growing “human” emotions. Revolving around the robot protagonist, Sheldon, we see what it’s like to be thrust into a new world of passion, excitement, and love.

I’m Here features a multitude of cleverly conceived robot personalities, creating an original atmosphere that is genuinely interesting. I don’t want to give away too much, but you’ll be left craving for more from this world and these characters.

This beautiful short was filmed in Southern California and although funded by Absolut Vodka, it has nothing to do with alcohol. The trailer for the film is embedded above. To watch the full thing, you can go here. Unfortunately, the official site only allows a certain number of screenings a day, and it’s not available anywhere else. Despite this, it  is still well worth the wait.

*Anyone who enjoys thought-provoking short films. Or indie music.
