The Rez Sisters by Tomson Highway Opens in Athens, GA
It’s not just bingo. It’s THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD as seven women from a reserve compete for the chance to fulfill their dreams. Hilarious, shocking, mystical and powerful, this award-winning play clearly establishes the creative voice of Native theatre and writing in North America today. The show runs from March 24-28 @ 8pm and March 28 @ 2:30 in the Cellar Theatre at 203 Baldwin Street Athens, GA. Tickets are $10, $7 for students and seniors.
The Rez Sisters features characters who are Native women and deals with issues that feature prominently in that community. However, Highway has played on the universality of each of these issues. This play is very primal in many ways. It deals with the rawest of topics….scatological humor, sex, drinking yourself dumb and broke, anger, survival, dreams, love, bloodcurdling violence, family, spirituality, life…..and bingo. Everyone can relate. I see a little of myself in each of these characters. –Amanda Adams
With a colorblind cast, it makes it a little more universal with respect to how women are perceived and treated in society, and how they survive it. It’s the kind of play that will make you laugh and cry your heart out at the same time. –Katie Robert
The play highlights issues about sexuality and abuse of women. I mean, I play a bisexual Indian biker chick who sings classic country. That’s pretty loaded. What more could you want? –Katelyn Foley
