Shooting Driving Plates for 24

Stargate Studios, the same company behind the incredible virtual backlot video which made the rounds a few weeks ago (which can be found HERE if you haven’t seen it yet) and responsible for many of the effects in the 24 series, has put together a video detailing the use of VDSLR’s in 24. The television show has always been an early adopter of new digital cinema technology even experiment with 35mm adapters at one point. Recently, the creative forces behind the series have been introducing the Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 1D Mark IV into their production environment, initially for vfx plates, then as a B camera, and soon to transition to the primary role, as detailed in the video.

The video shows off the impressive 5D setup used to capture driving plates for 24. Rodney Charters (ASC, CSC) and Sam Nicholson (ASC) describe how they are integrating the cameras into their workflow in addition to showing off the impressive mount and exoskeleton system they use to mount the cameras to the Hyundai Genesis for the plates. The video is a great, quick look into how these consumer and prosumer level cameras are infiltrating the professional market and finding their way onto popular productions.
