Biz of Screenwriting: Scoggins Reports 2009
The Scoggins Reports (Jason Scoggins’ monthly Spec Market Roundups and Spec Market Scorecards) are terribly unscientific analyses of the feature film spec script market based on information culled from a variety of public and non-public sources. The numbers do not include pitch sales or the film rights to underlying material. These are by no means official statistics, but merely a fairly complete summary. How many specs scripts came out in 2009, how many where sold, which of the major 6 buyers bought the most, or how many comedies made up the total spec scripts submitted are the kinds of information you will find in the Scoggins Reports.
Like any professional in any industry, it’s essential you know about the inner workings. Who is buying and optioning scripts is just as important as knowing what kind of scripts are selling. I’m not suggesting that you write only to meet what is ‘hot’ on the market, but knowing what is happening in Hollywood means you can better navigate the industry. If it helps, consider this ‘trading information’ for screenwriters. The report is in a .pdf
