hitRECord

Although Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be primarily recognized for his role in 10 Things I Hate About You and the more recent 500 Days of Summer, he is also owner of the site hitRECord.org, a project he has been running for almost five years. hitRECord is basically a community that is based around the act of “hitting record”, in the context of both music and film, although all forms of art are encouraged. These projects are hosted on his site as “records” and may later develop into commercial projects. And that’s the whole idea behind the site. In Joe’s own words:

In a nutshell: we create and develop art and media collaboratively here on our site; we use my position in the traditional entertainment industry to turn that creativity into money-making productions; and then we share any profits with the contributing artists.

Joe’s first published film, Sparks, was selected for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, as well as Morgan M. Morgansen, which screened at the 2010 Sundance Festival. Overall this concept seems to carry a lot of promise, and is something independent filmmakers should definitely keep their eye on.
