Time to Accessorize
So you have a brand new VDSLR. You slap your kit lens on, open the lens as wide as it goes, and run outside to film the shallowest depth of field crap you can. After a few weeks of this, hopefully you’ve gotten over your bokake fetish (a play on the word bokeh, you pervert) you realize that to actually make a film you need to stabilize, focus, and kill that glare. Time to accessorize.
Even for a basic kit, there are many vendors who make dozens of similar, if not identical, products priced all over the place and located throughout the world. You can’t exactly head over to your local camera store to sample the kits and see what you like. The solution (provided you don’t have friends with gear with which you can play) is to consult Cinema5D’s, one of the premiere VDSLR communities, exhaustive VDSLR rig review. It’s massive, thorough, and tests more gear from more vendors than any other review anywhere.
The 62 page review starts here and covers both handheld and tripod setups focusing on stabilization, focus, and glare. Vendors range from industry staples like Arri and Chrosziel to newcomers such as D|Focus and Magic Spider. Unfortunately, RedRock requested Cinema5D remove the reviews of their products as they were far from desirable for RedRock. Even with this missing vendor, the reviews are indispensable to any VDSLR owner (not just those with a Canon 5D, 7D, or 1D) looking to create a filmmaking rig.
