ISO 800 is the new 320

RED is slowly updating their fans and the cinema world at large with information on their long-awaited and overdue Epic and Scarlet product line. Today, the development team is showing off a quick 4.5K (2K downres) of their new Mysteium X sensor in a hybrid RED One body. The focus of the test is the impressive ISO performance the new sensor boasts. The image above (a lobster named “Snappy”) is a screen capture from the recording which was captured at ISO 800, T8, 1/48 (the particular lens is unnamed), lit with a B2Pro Daylight Silver reflector.
As is immediately evident, the sensor is unbelievably clean at the relatively high rating easily besting the noise of the original RED sensor at ISO 320. In fact, the image is so clean it may warrant the addition of some post grain in order to avoid a harsh, super-clean video look. One final point to notice is the soft highlight rolloffs, distinct from the harsh video-like cutoff the previous sensors exhibit.
The video and image are promising and it seems RED may have a winner on their hands – if they ever start shipping. You can download the ProRes LT clip HERE.
